Horse owners buy large round bales, too. If a horse owner has one horse and some storage they'll feed square bales, but a lot of horse owners have multiple horses and limited storage. If an owner has four or more horses a large round bale is often more practical to feed than lugging heavy squares around by hand.

Round bales are much more weather resistant than square bales, so they can sit under a shed or even out in the open with limited waste; square bales must be stored in an enclosed barn or shed. Horses eat the hay from any shape of bale as long as it's finely textured and abundantly leafy.
