Q. How many hens will fit in my backyard?

A. The subject of square feet per bird has been a subject of debate for a while.

The size of a flock kept in a coop with a yard to range in must be carefully controlled if you want to have any grass left in your back yard.

Robert Plamondon at Practical Poultry Tips recommends 50 birds or less on an acre. The typical size lot these days is 1/5 of an acre to you'd be maxed out at 5-10 birds depending on how much of your lot is fenced and available to the birds.
